Recently I wondered why a hung parliament could be an embarrassing result for the country. Some of the individuals may be excellent, but as united parties, none are outstanding. So it appears to be based on lack of choice, not spoilt for choice why a hung parliament is possible.
Numerous reasons could highlight the lack of an outstanding party. Differing agendas in the population, parties not being competent at getting their message across, media concentrating too much on political scandal and calling for resignations at every opportunity, bias political commentary etc.
Perfection is an ideal and politicians are not perfect; they never have been and never will be. What they are however is accountable to the public through the democracy of an election. To quote a conversation with Eddie Arthur who said “I just don’t think people realise how lucky we are in the UK that even the worst politicians step down when they are voted out. They don’t park tanks in Downing Street to get their job back.” Eddie wrote a sobering piece about this here.
